Cross Country Records Best Ever Combined Finish At NCAA Championships
December 24, 2018 | Tyee Club
In 2018, the Washington cross country program earned its best combined finish in program history at the NCAA Championships under first-year coaches Maurica and Andy Powell. The men finished in sixth place while the women's team came in ninth in their respective championship races during snowy conditions in Madison, Wisc.
It marked the second time in school history that both Husky squads finished in the top-10 at the NCAA Championships. The sixth- and ninth-place finishes makes for the best combined finish for Washington in program history, surpassing the previous best from 1989 of fourth for the men and 12th for the women. Additionally, Washington was one of just six programs to have both its teams place in the top-10 at nationals.
It was an impressive result for the women who had not been ranked in the top-10 all year. The women had two runners earn All-America honors, with juniors Katie Rainsberger taking 19th and Lilli Burdon finishing 33rd.
For the men, the sixth-place finish was the second-best in UW history, with only the fourth-place team from 1989 finished higher. It's just the fourth top-10 finish in school history for the men, who were led by two All-American honorees with finishes from senior Tanner Anderson in 19th-place and sophomore Tibebu Proctor in 38th-place.
Earlier in the year, both teams displayed impressive results with the men earning a second place finish at the Pac-12 Championships, while the women earned a fourth place finish behind three top-10 squads.
