Men's And Women's Rowing Collect More Hardware In 2018
December 22, 2018 | Tyee Club
2018 was another incredible year for the Washington men's and women's rowing programs. Both squads won back-to-back Pac-12 Conference championships while the women finished second at the NCAA Nationals and the men took home the James Ten Eyck Trophy for the 11th time in the past 12 years.
Both men's and women's programs were ranked No. 1 in the country entering the Pac-12 Championship regatta. The Huskies proved worthy of that ranking at Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif., as the Washington men and women won nine out of 10 races, including both varsity eight finals, to clinch back-to-back conference titles. It was the men's 38th conference championship and the women's 16th league crown in their respective program histories.
The women finished second at the NCAA Rowing Championships in Sarasota, Fla., falling just shy of the overall title to California. The second varsity eight won its grand final, while both the varsity eight and varsity four earned runner-up finishes. Washingtin's NCAA second-place finish was the Huskies' 22nd top-10 finish in 22 total NCAA championship regatta appearances.
In June, on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J., the men's squad took home the James Ten Eyck Trophy as the overall points winner at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships. The varsity eight claimed second place, finishing behind Yale. The Huskies won both the second and third varsity eight grand finals to secure the 15th Ten Eyck Trophy in school history.
