Softball's Trip To The WCWS Championship Series
December 20, 2018 | Tyee Club
In 2018, Washington softball continued to show why it is one of the premier programs in the country as the Huskies reached the WCWS Championship Series in Oklahoma City, Okla. It was the fourth time in program history that Washington has advanced to the championship series.
Under the leadership of head coach Heather Tarr, the Dawgs won 52 games, the third most in program history. UW's trip to Oklahoma City was its second consecutive and 13th in school history.
The Huskies started out the regular season on fire winning their first 28 games and the Dawgs finished the year hot yet again. The Huskies stormed to the WCWS Final by winning eight straight postseason games. Washington went 3-0 in regional play and then took two straight from No. 12 Alabama in the Super Regional to advance to Oklahoma City. In the WCWS, Washington beat No. 4 Oklahoma twice, along with top-seeded Oregon, to reach the championship series.
The team was propelled by strong pitching throughout the year in Taran Alvelo and Gabbie Plain who helped the staff post a 1.18 ERA, which was second in the nation. The two aces combined for 19 shutouts on the season. The defense was also a strong catalyst, as the Huskies' fielding percentage was fifth in the nation and only committed 35 errors on the year. Sis Bates was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year. Bates also lead the team in hitting, batting .389 with 75 hits on the year, which earned her NFCA First Team All-American honors.
