Men's Basketball Hits Buzzer-Beater To Defeat No. 9 Arizona
December 14, 2018 | Tyee Club
On an unforgettable Saturday night in February, Dominic Green made a buzzer-beating 3-pointer in front of a raucous sold-out crowd to give the Washington men's basketball team a 78-75 victory over No. 9 Arizona. It was the second time in the season that the Dawgs had taken down a top-10 opponent after knocking off then-No. 2 Kansas in December.
With only seconds remaining, Green corralled a loose ball as time was winding down and fired a 3-point attempt in front of his home bench. The shot looked good from the time it left his hand, and it was, nothing but net just as time expired. Green was mobbed by his teammates and fans stormed the court in another vintage moment in the long history of Hec Edmundson Pavilion. The game was a signature win for first-year head coach Mike Hopkins en route to him being honored as the 2018 Pac-12 Coach of the Year.
Washington's zone defense held the Wildcats to just 36-percent shooting from the field in the first half and only 16-percent from the 3-point line in the game. Noah Dickerson was a force inside scoring 25 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Three other Huskies were in double figures as David Crisp added 16 points, with Jaylen Nowell and Green each adding 14 points. However, no points were bigger than Green's last second shot.
After the game, Hopkins celebrated with the fans on the floor, thanking them for their passion and energy that they brought the entire game. In his postgame press conference, Hopkins said, "It was as loud as I've heard in any arena, you could see our guys get that extra jolt of energy."
