Gymnastics Advances To NCAA Nationals For Second Straight Year
December 12, 2018 | Tyee Club
In 2018, the GymDawgs reached NCAA Nationals for the second straight year and the seventh time in program history. Head coach Elise Ray-Statz's squad finished second at the University Park Regional, powering their way to NCAA Nationals in St. Louis behind by a strong floor performance.
At the University Park Regionals, Maya Washington, Zoey Schaefer, and Kristyn Hoffa were NCAA Regional champions on floor. Washington, Schaefer, and Hoffa all recorded scores of 9.900 to help the UW put up its highest event score, at 49.350.
At NCAA Nationals, Joslyn Goings earned All-American honors after finishing eighth on beam with a score of 9.875. Goings became the seventh GymDawg to receive an All-American award as well as the third in the last two years. Washington finished fifth in session two at NCAA Nationals, falling just short of advancing to the Super Six.
Throughout the regular season, the GymDawgs spent most of the season ranked inside the top-15 in the country and ending the regular season ranked eighth, the highest regular-season finish in Washington program history. Washington would take fourth place at the Pac-12 Championships in Tucson, Ariz. Four times in the season the GymDawgs recorded a team score of 197 or higher, which tied a school record.
