Baseball's First-Ever Trip To The CWS
December 10, 2018 | Tyee Club
2018 was a magical season for the Washington baseball team. The Huskies reached the pinnacle of the college baseball world, Omaha. It was the first College World Series appearance for a program led by head coach Lindsey Meggs. Meggs' squad was a tight knit group that possessed a strong family bond and it was evident to anyone watching that these Huskies kept themselves loose and played with a true love of the game.
It could be that Joe DeMers tossing the first perfect game in Husky history against UC Riverside in February was a sign of the incredible season to come. However, the season was not all smooth sailing. After a mid-April loss to UT Rio Grande Valley, the Dawgs were 18-18, but UW showed its grit, as the Huskies would go on to finish the season winning five-straight series and 12 of the final 17 regular season games. The Huskies would finish Pac-12 play at third in the conference with a 20-10 record. The Dawgs would go on to beat Coastal Carolina, and then Connecticut twice in the NCAA Conway Regional to advance to the Super Regionals. Joe Wainhouse was named the Tournament MVP after homering in all three games with six RBI.
Next up was a matchup in the NCAA Super Regionals against Cal State Fullerton. The Huskies and the Titans split the first two games of the series. It would come down to the winner-take-all Game 3 of the Super Regional with the victor headed to Omaha. Nine innings wouldn't be enough to decide a winner. The Huskies would win the ballgame in the bottom of the 10th on a sacrifice fly from Kaiser Weiss – who also scored the game tying run in the ninth to send it to extras.
The magical run to Omaha ended with the Dawgs dropping their first two games to Mississippi State and Oregon State. However, that did not take away from the magical season that captured the hearts of all Huskies fans and displayed what it means to be #DaWgStrong.
