Huskies Host Lipscomb in NCAA First Round
November 12, 2018 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE --- Washington has earned its third-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament and will host Atlantic Sun Champs Lipscomb University in a first-round match at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at Husky Soccer Stadium.
The Huskies are riding high heading into the tournament having won their last four games by identical 2-0 scores and finishing the regular-season with a 12-7-0 record.
Washington is making its sixth trip to the NCAA Tournament in eight seasons under Head Coach Jamie Clark. The Huskies are 4-4-2 in those appearances and have reached at least the third round in three of those trips. Overall, Washington is 12-23-2 in the NCAA tournament and have an 8-10-0 record in the first round, having won three of their last four.
"Hearing your name get called on Selection Monday never gets old," said Head Coach Jamie Clark. "It's so incredible to see the excitement in the group the moment your name appears. I'm excited to see new teams in our quadrant of the bracket, as hosting and traveling to new places just adds to the experience. Clearly every team in the 48-team field has earned their way into the tournament, so we know we will have to be at our very best to get results."
Lipscomb enters the tournament with a 9-9-0 overall record. But the Bison have played a tough schedule and have won eight of their last 10 games after a 2-7-0 start to the season. That includes a pair of victories in the Atlantic Sun conference tournament this past weekend including avenging an earlier loss to Stetson in a 2-0 victory in the championship game. It marked the second-straight ASUN title for the Bison.
Lipscomb has played well against some of the country's top teams this season, including a 3-2 win over the tournament's No. 4 overall seed Louisville in mid-October. Earlier in the season, the Bison overcame a two-goal deficit, but lost 3-2 in overtime to No. 3-seeded Kentucky.
Leading the way for the Bison is Logan Paynter, who has tallied nine goals on the season including both in the ASUN championship game. He is one 10 players to score on the season.
The winner of the first-round match takes a long trip to Florida to face off against the No. 14 seeded Central Florida Knights. Despite losing in PKs to SMU in the American Athletic Conference Championship, the Knights wrapped up the season with an impressive 13-2-3 overall record including an 8-1-3 mark at home.
On the other side of the bracket, a pair of familiar teams face off in the first round as Portland plays host to UCLA. The winner of that match heads to No. 3 Kentucky on Sunday.
Tickets for the first-round matchup are $12 for adults, $6 for youth, seniors, students and groups. Current Washington men's soccer season ticket holders have priority access to purchase tickets to Thursday's first round game against Lipscomb. The priority window will close at 1:00 PM (PT) on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at which point tickets will go on sale to the general public.
