SEATTLE --- Washington senior Justin Fiddes was selected in the first round as the 17th overall pick by the Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the first round of the Major League Soccer Superdraft on Friday.
Fiddes is the second Husky picked to play in the MLS from the 2017 squad after Handwalla Bwana signed as a Homegrown Player with Sounders FC last week. Overall, Fiddes is the 13th Washington player selected in the MLS draft or signed homegrown over last five seasons.
"Fiddes has all the tools to play in the MLS for a long time," said UW Head Coach Jamie Clark. "He has the pace to influence the game on either side of the ball and own the wide areas of the field. Most importantly he's got a great work ethic and will continue to grow as a player and overcome the increasing challenges of the pro game."
During the MLS Combine last week, Fiddes was impressive, running the fastest 30 meter time at 3.84 seconds. He also tallied a goal in the scrimmage game which ended the combine, working free to send home a goal in front of the box.
Fiddes was one of two Huskies start all 20 matches last season, amassing 1,704 minutes (85+ per match average). He earned second-team United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I All-Far West Region honors and was an All-Pac-12 honorable mention pick as well.
For his career, Fiddes recorded a goal and had 10 assists, appearing in 70 games. As a senior, he tallied four assists including on each in the final two games of the season and added one against Stanford and Loyola Marymount.
