September 21, 2017 | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing
Eleven Huskies, including three current undergraduate rowers, will compete at the 2017 World Rowing Championships starting this Sunday, Sept. 24, at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla.
Six UW women and five men will row for six different nations in the regatta, which runs through the following Sunday, Oct. 1. Included in that group are current Huskies Ben Davison '18, Bram Schwarz '20 and Carmela Pappalardo '20, who will all continue their UW rowing careers after the regatta.
Davison and Schwarz will both row in the in the men's double sculls, as will Canadian Conlin McCabe '11. Davison, who won a bronze medal in the all-Husky U.S. men's coxed four earlier this summer at the Under-23 Championships will be making his senior worlds debut. Schwarz rowed in the Dutch men's eight that won gold at this summer's U-23s. He's also rowed at three Junior World Championships in the past.
McCabe is a two-time Olympian who won a silver medal in the Canada men's eight in the 2012 Games in London. He'll be competing at Worlds for the sixth time. The men's double sculls competition starts with heats on Monday, Sept. 25.
Jacob Dawson '16, who captained the Huskies as a senior, will continue to represent Great Britain the men's eight. He has competed at two World Cup events this summer in the eight after having rowed in the pair at two earlier events in 2017. Men's eight heats begin next Tuesday, Sept. 26.
Finn Schroeder '16 will row for Germany in the men's coxed pair. Earlier this summer, in the World Cup II event in Poland, Schroeder won a bronze medal in the straight four. He's rowed for Germany in a number of different boats at the World Cup, Under-23s and Junior Worlds in the past, but will be making his World Championship debut in Florida. The men's coxed pair heats will be the first events of the competition, Sunday morning at 7:00 a.m. PT.
Four UW women will row for the United State while two others will represent Great Britain and Italy.
Sarah Dougherty '16 and coxswain Katelin (Snyder) Guregian '09 will both compete in the American eight. Dougherty, who rowed at Under-23s last summer, made her senior debut in the U.S. four earlier this summer at a World Cup event. Guregian coxed the U.S. women's eight to the gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. She has also earned three World Championship gold medals in the powerful American boat, in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
Those two will compete against UW alumna Fiona Gammond '15, who will row in the Great Britain entry. Gammond was part of the GB eights that took third at this summer's World Cup III Regatta in Lucerne and finished fourth at the 2017 European Championships. She won a gold medal in the coxless four at the 2016 World Championships. Women's eight heats get underway Tuesday morning.
Pappalardo, who rowed at the Under-23 Worlds with the Italian four earlier this summer, will compete at the World Championships for the first time. A veteran of the Italian team at the Under-23 and Junior levels, she also participate in two World Cup events in 2016. The women's four heats begin Monday morning.
Veteran American rower Megan Kalmoe '06 and partner Tracy Eisser will compete in the pair, an event in which they took silver in two World Cup events this summer. Kalmoe is a three-time Olympian (bronze medal in the quad sculls in 2012) who will be participating in her seventh World Championship. Her heat is Monday morning.
Danielle Hansen '16, who will work as an intern coach with the Husky women this year, will once again row in the United States leg, trunk and arms mixed four. Hansen won a silver medal for the U.S. in that event at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Brazil and also at both the 2014 and 2015 World Championships. The U.S. four will row in an exhibition on Tuesday, Sept. 26, and then row in the final the following Saturday, Sept. 30.
Nathan Benderson Park, home to this year's championships, will also host the 2018 NCAA Rowing Championships next May 25-27.
