Huskies Cruise To Solid Opener At Magnuson Park
September 01, 2017 | Cross Country
SEATTLE - The weather didn't much resemble what is likely to be waiting in Kentucky in November, but the Huskies enjoyed some 80-degrees and sun and got the cross country season rolling at Magnuson Park with the UW-Seattle U Dual. Washington runners took the first 10 spots in the women's race and Huskies made up the first twelve finishers on the men's side.
Culminating the first week of practice for the Huskies, the race knocked the rust off for the Huskies before they head to their fall camp next week. Any Husky who has never redshirted in cross country raced unattached today, in a wide variety of uniforms.
The women ran 4,800-meters around Magnuson along the shores of Lake Washington. From the early going, senior Izzi Batt-Doyle looked ready to lead, as she is just over a week removed from running a competitive 10,000-meters at the World University Games in Taiwan. Batt-Doyle would come through and win by nearly 10 seconds, finishing in 16:18. Sophomores Nikki Zielinski and Kaitlyn Neal were second and third in 16:27 and 16:28. Five more Huskies crossed together from 16:32 to 16:34 including Pac-12 Champ Amy-Eloise Neale, Emily Hamlin, Anna Maxwell, Allie Schadler, and Camila David-Smith.
"First impression," said Head Coach Greg Metcalf, "our women's group we had lots of healthy bodies that had good summer and they're excited to get started. Izzi just got off a plane yesterday after running 10,000-meters at the World University Games and she has a great level of fitness. We also had lots of wonderful freshmen doing good things today an so far in practice. I liked what I saw from our women considering it's 80-plus degrees out here. It was a nice way to get this started."
The men ran one more loop for 7,200-meters, with six Huskies crossing in a pack less than two seconds apart. The official win went to senior Johnathan Stevens in 22:25 seconds, but right alongside him were sophomores Charlie Barringer and Julius Diehr, and freshmen Talon Hull, Tibebu Proctor, and Chase Equall. Veteran Huskies Colby Gilbert, Fred Huxham, Mahmoud Moussa, and Andrew Gardner paced themselves close together from 7th to 11th-places.
Metcalf likes the potential depth on the men's side. "For the men it's great to see Fred, and Colby, and Andrew out there running. Johnny Stevens and Charlie Barringer are back at it. Our group, one to fifteen, are healthy and they were joined by some very talented freshmen up front today, so I'm excited where we are on day one."
Washington will next toe the line at the annual Sundodger Invitational in West Seattle's Lincoln Park on Saturday, Sept. 16.
