Hopkins Adds Hameir Wright to Class of 2017
June 30, 2017 | Men's Basketball
SEATTLE – The University of Washington men's basketball coaches have been busy this week as head coach Mike Hopkins has announced that 6-8 small forward Hameir Wright will join the class of 2017. Wright, out of Albany, N.Y., has signed an aid agreement and is enrolled in summer classes at Washington. Hopkins also signed shooting guard Nahziah Carter earlier this week.
"We're really excited to have Hameir join our program," said Hopkins. "At 6-8, his ability to shoot the ball at his size and stretch the floor is what's really special about him. He can not only shoot from the perimeter but he can go low and block shots and score around the rim. He has a high basketball IQ and is going to be a great foundation for this class."
Wright, a four-star player who attended the Albany Academy, was named the 2017 Gatorade New York Player of the Year and was a two-time Class A Player of the Year in New York as both a junior and a senior. During his senior season with the Cadets, Wright averaged 16.7 points, 9.1 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.9 blocks per game while leading his squad win the Class A Federation Tournament Championship. Wright was also named the MVP of the Federation Championships as a junior.
Additionally, he was a teammate of fellow signee Carter as both played on the Albany City Rocks team before Wright spent the last season with the PSA Cardinals. At this summer's Nike Elite Youth Basketball League, Wright averaged 4.1 rebounds in 11 games, which ranked second on his squad.
Wright will join Michael Carter III, Jaylen Nowell, Nahziah Carter and Nate Pryor for the Class of 2017.
"I think we have an extremely talented and diverse freshman class that all do different things but complement each other perfectly," said Hopkins. "The most important thing is that they want to be Huskies, they want to be a part of this program and really believe in what we're doing. We're really excited to have them all here."
