Neale Places Eighth In NCAA 1,500m Final
June 10, 2017 | Track & Field
EUGENE, Ore. – Amy-Eloise Neale capped off her outstanding 2016-17 campaign with an eighth-place finish in the 1,500-meter finals today at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Neale was the final Husky track athlete in action at Hayward Field and became the second Dawg to make the podium this week, joining Kristina Owsinski in the pole vault.
This was the third consecutive NCAA track final in the 1,500m/Mile for Neale, and her highest finish thus far. She was 10th in the 1,500m final one year ago also at Oregon. The one team point earned by her eighth-place finish plus the four from Owsinski gave UW a total of five points for the championship, which put them in a tie for 43rd-place overall.
The race went out slowly over the first lap but began to pick up speed from there. All twelve women in the final were still very much in the mix with a lap to go, as Neale made a move from the back up to the middle of the pack. With so many women still in the mix, there started to be some contact amongst the runners as they pushed for positions, and Neale looked to nearly get tripped up once on the final backstretch but kept her feet and pushed ahead.
As the runners came around the final turn, Neale still had a shot as about ten runners were within 10 meters, but with the slow early pace, not many women were giving or making up much ground as all sprinted to the line. Neale crossed in 4:14.89, just over a second behind the winning time of 4:13.78 and less than a second out of third-place.
Neale is now a four-time All-American, earning a First Team All-America honor today to go with a pair of Second Team All-America honors and one cross country All-America honor from this past fall where she was also eighth at NCAAs.
The Snohomish, Wash. native will have a full year of eligibility remaining in 2017-18.
