Washington Rally Falls Short, Utah Wins Game Two Of Supers

Utah (37-15) took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning, after Kelly Martinez hit a two-run home run.
Washington (47-12) answered back in the third inning, scoring four runs off three hits. Morganne Flores hit her third home run of the Super Regional, plating Casey Stangel who previously drew a walk off Utah's Katie Donovan (18-9). Two more runs were scored after a walk was issued to Taylor Van Zee and Julia DePonte homered to send her home.
Washington's 4-2 lead didn't last long as Utah pushed seven more runs through in the bottom of the frame. With two on and no outs, Anissa Urtez doubled to right field, plating one. The Utes then loaded the bases and Hannah Flippen scored off a wild pitch from Taran Alvelo (31-7). Heather Bowen extended the lead after she hit a sacrifice fly out to right field, allowing one more run to cross home.
With Utah ahead 5-4 and two outs in the third, Washington put freshman pitcher Samantha Manti in the game for Alvelo. Utah's BreOnna Castaneda then hit her second home run of the series, tacking three more runs on. The teams ended the inning with Utah ahead, 7-4.
The Huskies did not back down, as they scored two more runs in the fourth inning. Stangel singled, followed by a walk issued to Flores. Van Zee doubled to right center, sending the two base runners home.
Two more runs were scored in the final two innings. The first came off a RBI single from Kirstyn Thomas, plating pinch runner Amirah Milloy. The final run of the game came from a sacrifice fly from Stangel, allowing Bates to score after previously doubling.
Washington will look to advance to their 12th WCWS in Oklahoma City tomorrow at 7 p.m. PT. The final game of the Super Regionals will be aired live on ESPN2.
