Stacey Fung Falls At NCAA Singles Championships
May 25, 2017 | Women's Tennis
ATHENS, Ga. – In the second round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championships, Stacey Fung fell to Ellen Perez of Georgia today 7-5, 6-3 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Coming off of a victory yesterday in which Fung won the second set 6-2, she continued her roll into today's battle with Perez, taking three of the first four games to grab an early 3-1 lead. However, the 12th ranked player by the ITA in singles from Georgia responded, taking the next three games. After the two traded tough shots back and forth and continued to counter each other, Perez claimed the first set by a final tally of 7-5.
In the second set, Fung put up a great fight to open up, fighting back to bring the set to 2-2 after losing the opening game. Perez would end up going on a run however, winning the second set 6-3 and eliminating Fung from the tournament.
This was the furthest a Husky had gone at the NCAA Singles Championships since current assistant coach Denise Dy made it to the second round in 2012. Fung finishes the 2017 season with 24 singles victories, the most since the 2010-11 season when the All-American Dy recorded 30 wins.
This marks the official end of play for the 2017 Washington Huskies, however they will be back in action later this summer during the 2017 ITA Summer Circuit.
