ATHENS, Ga. – Earlier today the NCAA released the bracket for the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championships, with Washington sophomore Stacey Fung earning a first round matchup against Carol Zi Yang of UNLV on Wednesday May 24th at 9 a.m. PT.
Matches will begin tomorrow at 6 a.m. PT at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. The bracket, consisting of 64 student-athletes, features the NCAA's best, who will compete over the next six days to determine this season's individual singles champion.
After bursting onto the college tennis scene as a freshman last season, Fung topped her performance this year as a sophomore, collecting 23 singles wins and setting a new career-best ITA ranking of 29th on April 25th.
"I'm really happy to have made the singles event in Georgia," said Fung. "It was one of my goals this year to qualify and represent UW at the tournament and now I'm ready to do some damage."
The Vancouver, B.C. native led the charge for the Huskies this season, playing each match at the top court in singles. Fung picked up big wins for the Dawgs during the Pac-12 season, defeating No. 27 Lauren Marker of Arizona and No. 61 Kassidy Jump of ASU during the same weekend, and taking down No. 54 Caroline Doyle against 10th ranked Stanford. She helped Washington defeat USC for the first time since 2009, picking up a huge win over No. 20 Gabby Smith to begin the eventual comeback win from a 0-3 deficit. For her efforts this past season, Fung was recently named to the All-Pac-12 Second Team.
Her first round opponent, Yang, owns a singles record of 25-11 this season and went 13-7 during dual matches. She ranked as high as 24th in the country this year, and picked up ranked wins over the likes of No. 74 Sybille Gauvain of SJSU and No. 10 Viktoriya Lushkova of OSU.
Fung and Yang will be playing for the chance to face the winner of Kimmy Guerin of Wake Forest and Ellen Perez of Georgia tomorrow in the second round.
The matches will have a live stream and scoring page, which can be found at the links above. You can keep up with Fung's progress this week at the NCAA Singles Championships by following us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and by checking out our website at GoHuskies.com.
