Men's Golf Season Comes To Close With Seventh Place Regional Finish
May 17, 2017 | Men's Golf
SAMMAMISH, Wash. -- The 30th-ranked University of Washington men's golf team saw its season come to a close on Wednesday (May 17) with a seventh-place finish in the 14-team field at the 2017 NCAA Sammamish Regional at Aldarra Golf Club. The Huskies shot a 4-over par 288 during the final round to complete the tournament with a 54-hole total of 17-over 869 at the 6,885-yard par-71 course.
With the top five teams advancing to the NCAA championship series, Washington (+17) made a furious charge late, carding nine birdies on the back nine to briefly move into a three-way tie for fifth, but Alabama and Penn State pulled away on the final three holes.
No. 1 USC (-2) was the only team to finish below par, capturing the regional title by five strokes over No. 12 Kent State (+3), while Florida State (+10) and Alabama (+10) tied for third and Penn State (+11) landed in the fifth spot.
The Huskies slipped one place from the previous day as Texas A&M (+15) finished in sixth.
Senior Corey Pereira led the charge and was the Huskies' top individual at the event, recording a team-best 68 over the final 18 holes to finish in a tie for 11th place out of 75 golfers at even-par 213. In the final event of his exceptional collegiate career, the Cameron Park, Calif. native drained six birdies, including four on the back nine, compared to just one bogey and double-bogey en route to his ninth round of the year in the 60s.
Sophomore Carl Yuan and junior Frank Garber both finished in a tie for 19th overall at 4-over 217. Yuan, an All-Pac-12 honoree, got off to an inauspicious start with two double-bogeys over his first five holes before storming back with eight pars and three birdies.
Garber carded three birdies, including a pivotal one late on the par-4 No. 14, but an untimely double-bogey at the par-4, No. 16 stymied his progress on the individual leaderboard.
Elsewhere, freshman Henry Lee (+9) finished in a tie for 34th while fellow freshman Daniel List (+15) finished tied for 52nd in their first-ever regional appearance.
Three bogeys and a double-bogey offset Lee's two birdies and 12 pars as the rookie finished 3-over 74.
Despite carding 12 pars, List was plagued by two double-bogeys and four bogeys en route to a final-round 79.
Penn State's Cole Miller captured medalist honors by three shots at 7-under 206 over Sean Crocker (USC), Justin Suh (USC) and Ian Holt (Kent State), who all tied for the runner-up position at 4-under.
Meanwhile, Chandler Phillips (-2) of Texas A&M, who tied for seventh, earned the Sammamish Regional's individual bid to the NCAA Championships after finishing as the highest competitor not on one of the top-five squads.
