
Sis Bates Named To Top-11 List For Schutt Sports/NFCA DI Freshman Of The Year Award

LOUISVILLE, KY. -- Washington softball freshman Sis Bates is one of 11 Finalists selected for the 2017 Schutt Sports / NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year award, the NFCA announced on Thursday. Bates is one of five finalists selected from the Pac-12 Conference. 
"It's great to have one of our players be recognized as one of the best in the country," said Washington head coach Heather Tarr. "We are honored that the NFCA and the coaches in the association think that Sis is as good as we think she is."
The Ceres, Calif., native is Washington's first finalist for the prestigious award.
Bates leads the Huskies and Pac-12 in triples (5) and is the team leader for hits (55). The freshman has started all 51 games this season, playing at second base, third base and shortstop.
The finalists hail from 11 different universities and seven conferences. The Pac-12 conference leads the way with five selections. The Atlantic-10, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Big Ten, Big Sky, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and Southeastern Conference (SEC) make up the rest of the field.
The top three finalists will be voted and released on Wed., May 24. The Schutt Sports / NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year trophy will be presented during a live ceremony on May 30 at the WCWS banquet.
 
Created in 2014, the award honors outstanding athletic achievement among Division I freshmen softball student-athletes.
Up Next: Bates and the rest of the Huskies will play in their final conference series this weekend in Salt Lake City, Utah. The series against the Utes begins on Thursday, May 11 at 6 p.m. PT.
