
No. 6 Washington Wins Conference Opener Over No. 21 Arizona State

SEATTLE – No. 6 Washington (22-3) defeated No. 21 Arizona State (19-6) in the Pac-12 opener, 6-4, Saturday afternoon at Husky Softball Stadium.
Kirstyn Thomas and Morganne Flores totaled for six RBIs off four hits to help lead the Purple and Gold to victory in the conference opener.
Washington took an early lead, putting four runs on the board in the bottom of the first. Casey Stangel was issued a walk and advanced to second after a single from Julia DePonte. Sis Bates loaded the bases after getting walked by ASU's starting pitcher, Breanna Macha (7-4). Flores hit a two RBI single. Thomas followed by knocking in two more runs off a single up the middle.
The Sun Devils answered back in the top of the second inning off a two-RBI double and an RBI-single to cut the Huskies lead to 4-3.
Arizona State tacked on another run in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game at 4-4 after an RBI single.
The Huskies took back the lead in the bottom of the frame, bringing in two runs off three hits and an error on the Sun Devils' third baseman. Flores and Thomas each hit RBI singles to plate pinch runner Amirah Milloy and Bates.
Washington starter Taran Alvelo pitched seven full innings for the Huskies. The sophomore collected seven strikeouts on the day.
The Huskies and Sun Devils will conclude their series tomorrow, March 18 in a double header beginning at 10 a.m. The second game will begin approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
