
Huskies Roll Past UCSB In Five Innings

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – The No. 8 Washington Huskies (11-2) erupted with nine runs in their final game at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, including a grand slam from Casey Stangel in the third inning of their 10-2 win over UCSB (4-9). The team captured the win in just five innings after freshman Maggie Gallagher hit a walk off double to end the game.
The Dawgs pounded out 10 hits against UCSB, right after holding off Texas to a 7-2 win earlier that morning. Stangel led the team with four RBI's off two hits. Nine different Huskies recorded hits Sunday morning, Stangel recorded a multi-hit game.
The Gauchos answered back in the second and third inning with a pair of runs. In the top of the second, Kaitlin Barry hit an RBI double to bring home a runner. In the third inning they chipped away at the Husky lead more after an RBI single from Sierra Altmeyer. The Huskies escaped the third inning with one on base and down 2-1.
Washington was not behind for long as Van Zee found herself on third after being walked twice. She advanced home on a single from Morganne Flores. Trysten Melhart also crossed home on the hit to make the score 3-0, Huskies. With bases loaded and one out, Stangel hit two foul balls just inches shy of being a home runs, but seven pitches later she blasted it into centerfield for a grand slam. The Huskies led 9-2 at the end of the third.
The Huskies fought off a pressing Gaucho offense and sealed the deal in the bottom of the fifth inning after freshman Maggie Gallagher got her first hit of her career, an RBI double, plating Kaija Gibson, to end the game at 10-2.
Madi Schreyer captured the win and improved to 3-2 on the season after tossing three innings and striking out one. Freshman Samantha Manti came in as relief and struck-out three and allowed only two hits.
Washington will close out the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic against UC Barbara at 11:30 a.m., Sunday, Feb. 26. Next weekend the team will travel to Fullerton, Calif. for the Judi Garman Classic. There they will face Iowa, Indiana, Fresno State, Baylor and Northwestern for the second time this season.
The team will begin play at the Judi Garman Classic against Indiana on Friday, March 3 at 9:30 a.m. at the Anderson Family Field in Fullerton.
