SEATTLE - Over twenty hours of track and field spanning Friday through Sunday evening finished up in the Dempsey, concluding the longest weekend on Washington's home schedule. The Huskies made the most of their chances, and while most of the damage was done on Friday and Saturday in the Husky Classic, today's UW Indoor Open provided a few more season- and career-best marks for a handful of Huskies.
Junior Onyie Chibuogwu used a second straight day of hurling the weight to find her rhythm, and Chibuogwu got in a groove today with four of her six throws surpassing her old career-best. She came into the meet with a PR of 57-10 1/2, then went 58-8 1/2 on her second attempt, and 58-6 3/4 on her third. Her fourth throw would be her best of the day, tossing 59-10 1/2. Chibuogwu, a Pac-12 scorer in the hammer throw last year, already ranked No. 2 in school history in the weight throw, but PR'd in the event today for the first time since 2015.
In the top heat of the men's mile run, senior Blake Nelson and junior Andrew Gardner both took a shot at potential sub-fours. It was not to be today, but Nelson had a season-best 4:04.38 and Gardner had a major mile PR of 4:06.85.
The pole vault saw sophomore Chase Smith and senior Elizabeth Quick both attempting bars that would put them in strong standing for NCAA bids, but neither could quite get over the hump today. Quick missed three tries at 14-0 1/2, but still ranks 10th nationally after making 13-10 1/2 on Saturday. Smith jumped at 17-11, looking very close on his third and final try, but caught too much of the bar. Also in the vault, redshirt freshman Annika Dayton had another strong clearance of 12-10 3/4, and Tori Franzen made 12-4 3/4.
Elsewhere in the field events, freshman Jose Padilla threw 54-5 1/2 in the shot put for seventh-place. Savannah Burr, unattached, went 38-11 to take second overall in the triple jump today, and Kate Adler had a 17-4 long jump.
