
Bierria Earns Second Flaherty Award At UW Banquet

SEATTLE β Senior linebacker Keishawn Bierria won the 110th annual Guy Flaherty Award, the Washington football program's oldest and most prestigious team award, for the second year in a row, while Myles Gaskin (offense), Vita Vea (defense), and Dante Pettis (special teams) won Most Outstanding Player honors at the Husky football team's postseason awards ceremony Sunday.

Bierria, from Carson, Calif., capped the afternoon with his acceptance of the Guy Flaherty Award, given to the UW's most inspirational player, voted on by the players and first awarded in 1908. Bierra is the first repeat winner since Jake Locker (2009-10). He also won the Academic Achievement Award, along with center Coleman Shelton.

Gaskin, a junior tailback from Lynnwood, Wash., earned offensive MVP honors after rushing for 1,282 yards and 19 touchdowns. He's just the third Husky ever to rush for 1,000 yards in three seasons. He also won the Apple Cup Play of the Game Award for his thrilling 26-yard TD in the 41-14 win over the Cougars.

Vea, a junior defensive tackle from Milpitas, Calif., has been a dominant force on Washington's defense, which leads the Pac-12 Conference in rushing, scoring and total defense. Vea also won the Tyee Sports Council Community Service Award.

Pettis, a senior wide receiver and punt returner from San Clemente, Calif., has returned four punts for touchdowns in 2017, breaking the NCAA record for career punt return TDs, with nine. He's the nation's leader in punt returns and led the Huskies with 62 receptions.

Junior linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven (San Mateo, Calif.) and senior tight end Will Dissly (Bozeman, Mont.) were named co-winners of the Husky Excellence Award.

Shelton, a senior from Pasadena, Calif., also won the John P. Angel Offensive Lineman of the Year while junior Greg Gaines (La Habra, Calif.) was named winner of the L. WaitΒ Rising Defensive Lineman of the Year for the second year in a row. Tailback Salvon Ahmed (Kirkland, Wash.) and tight end Hunter Bryant (Issaquah, Wash.) shared the Travis Spring Freshman of the Year Award.

Sophomore cornerback Austin Joyner (Marysville, Wash.) was also honored with the Chuck Niemi Big Hit Award, while sophomore corner Myles Bryant (Pasadena, Calif.) and junior offensive tackle Kaleb McGary (Fife, Wash.) shared the Earle T. Glant Tough Husky Award.

The Husky Fever 12th Man Award was presented to senior linebacker Sean Constantine (Bellevue, Wash.) and senior tailback Ralph Kinne (Shelton, Wash.).

Senior outside linebacker Tevis Bartlett (Cheyenne, Wyo.) went home with the Academic Achievement Award while junior tight end Drew Sample (Bellevue, Wash.) was the winner of the Don James Perseverance Award.

The Bob Jarvis Offensive Scout Squad Player of the Year went to freshman quarterback Jake Haener (Danville, Calif.), the Mark Drennan Defensive Scout Squad Player of the Year was given to junior defensive back Sean Vergara (Selah, Wash.) and the Brian Stapp Special Teams Scout Squad Player of the Year Award was presented to freshman linebacker Ariel Ngata (Reno, Nev.).

For his work in the weight room, freshman tight end Cade Otton was presented the Ultimate Bird Dawg Award while senior tailback Lavon Coleman (Lompoc, Calif.) was named the winner of the Iron Husky Award.
