November 09, 2017 | Football
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Washington senior Dante Pettis has been named one of four finalists for the Paul Hornung Award, the Louisville Sports Commission announced this morning.
Pettis, a wide receiver and punt returner from San Clemente, Calif., has broken the NCAA record for career punt returns, having notched his ninth last Saturday in a 38-3 win over Oregon. He had four punt return TDs this year, tying the Pac-12 reocrd, and has also become the Pac-12's all-time leader in punt return yardage. He leads the nation in punt returns with a 21.7-yard average and is the only player in the country with more than two punt return scores this season. Additionally, he's the Huskies' leading wide receiver, with 49 receptions for 571 yards and seven touchdowns.
Pettis was named to every midseason All-America list this year as a returner or all-purpose player.
The other three finalists are Penn State's Saquon Barkley, North Carolina State's Nyheim Hines and Iowa State's Joel Lanning.
The Hornung Award is presented annually by the Louisville Sports Commission and Texas Roadhouse to the nation's most versatile player and named after the former Notre Dame and Green Bay Packers star, who is a lifelong Louisville resident and members of the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame.
Washington's Shaq Thompson was the recipient in 2014, the fifth year of the award.
