
Huskies Place 17 On Academic All-Pac-12 Teams

SAN FRANCISCO – A total of 17 Washington football players – five first-team selections, four second-teamers and eight honorable mention recipients – have earned Academic All-Pac-12 honors, the conference office announced today.
Two-time first-team selections Ben Burr-Kirven and Tevis Bartlett were joined on the top squad by wide receiver John Gardner, safety Taylor Rapp and kicker Van Soderberg.
Burr-Kirven, a junior linebacker from Menlo Park, Calif.,. was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 first team earlier this fall. The Huskies' leading tackler boasts a 3.58 grade point average in comparative literature, cinema and media studies.
Bartlett, a junior from Cheyenne, Wyo., leads the UW with 12 tackles for loss. He's an education, community & organizations (ECO) major with a 3.65 GPA. Gardner is a junior from Woodinville who is a regular on the kickoff team and has a 3.54 GPA as a mathematics major.
Rapp, a sophomore from Bellingham, Wash., was also named to the Academic All-District 8 team. The Pac-12 Defensive Freshman of the Year in 2016, he is second on the team in tackles and has a 3.66 grade point average. This fall, he was admitted to the Foster School of Business. Finally, Van Soderberg is a redshirt-freshman from Olympia, Wash., who has handled kickoffs, field goals and PATs during portions of this season. He has compiled a 3.91 GPA as a pre-engineering major.
Quarterback Jake Browning (3.37, business/finance) and offensive lineman Luke Wattenberg (3.36, pre-engineering) represented the offense on the second team while linemen Greg Gaines (3.25, extended pre-major) and Levi Onwuzurike (pre-arts & sciences) made it on the defensive side.
Additionally, the following eight players earned honorable mention: long snapper A.J. Carty, linebacker Sean Constantine, tight end Will Dissly, center Coleman Shelton, offensive guard Nick Harris, tight end Drew Sample, defensive lineman Vita Vea and kicker Tristan Vizcaino.
Only Utah, with six, had more first-team selections than Washington; while only Stanford, with 13, had more first- and second-team honorees, combined, than the Huskies' nine.
