Huskies Wrap Up 2017 Head Of The Charles Regatta
October 22, 2017 | Men's Rowing
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Washington's men's and women's rowing teams turned in another afternoon of solid finishes Sunday at the final day of the 53rd annual Head of the Charles Regatta.
The women finished third overall –first among college crews – in the championship women's eight, while the UW men were seventh overall and fifth among college teams, in the championship men's eight.
Washington's women, who won the NCAA Championship last spring, completed the three-mile course in 15:03.829, to finish third overall to Sudbury Rowing Club (a Canada-based club with a crew made up of experienced, international rowers from several different countries) and a boat representing the U.S. National Training Center at Princeton, which included former Huskies and U.S. Olympians Katelin (Snyder) Guregian and Megan Kalmoe in a crew of U.S. national team members.
The Sudbury boat won with a time of 14:48.423 while the U.S. boat was second in 15:00.167.
Washington finished ahead of a second USTC-Princeton boat, as well as a Canadian National Training Center crew, in an event that featured 36 entries -- mostly college programs. The next-best collegiate crew was Stanford, with a time about eight seconds behind the UW.
The Washington men, who last October won their fourth Head of the Charles championship men's eight in the last eight years, maintained its pace through most of the racing, posting splits between and fifth and eight-best at the various milestones. In the end, the Huskies' time of 13:43.932 was fifth-best collegiate time in the 26-boat field. California (13.27.469) won, with a club crew from New Zealand second (13:30.153) and Yale third (13:30.510).
On the first day of the regatta Saturday, UW's Anna Thornton took fourth place in the women's championship single sculls, while a Washington crew of Katy Gillingham and Kenzie Waltar finished sixth in the double sculls. Also, a UW alumni men's eight finished third in its event.
Next weekend, the defending NCAA champion women's team heads to Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif., for the Head of the American (Fri.-Sat., Oct. 27-28) while the men's team will next compete in the UW's annual Head of the Lake, Nov. 5 in Seattle.
