10 Questions with John Ross
September 15, 2016 | Football
What was the toughest part of rehabbing your torn ACL last season?
Just knowing the fact that I wasn't able to play. Rehab wasn't hard because our training staff is amazing and I've seen what they've done in the past with previous players. Most of those players are still successful or happy with the results they've seen.
Coach Petersen mentioned several times throughout last year how positive you were during your rehab, and how great of a mindset you have kept. How were you able to stay so positive?
Deontae Cooper. Just listening to him and him being in my ear telling me I'm gonna be alright. Him walking me through the process telling me that in the end it will all be for the better. At first I didn't understand, but now I get it, and I get why it happened, and I'm actually happy that it did happen.
What fuels you as an athlete?
I'm kind of weird – for an athlete, I'm more of a calm person. I like seeing energy from other people. Seeing smiles and seeing how happy this game can make people. My family fuels me. My little brothers. Stuff like that.
What are you studying?
American Ethnic Studies.
What do you want to do after football?
I may want to be a coach – I want to help kids really. I want to start YMCA type programs. People put labels on kids, they call them "at-risk kids", and I want to help kids like that who are in smaller communities and may not have much help.
Why Washington?
The people, really. My role model, John Timu went here. We went to the same high school, and just to know how well they were taken care of, how great the state was. I took so many unofficial trips to visit them and I liked everything about it. The brotherhood that this team has is amazing, even before I got here, and it has continued to get even better.
Do you have gameday rituals.
I really don't. I'm not a big ritual guy. Just take it as it comes.
What's your favorite thing about Husky Stadium?
The energy. I'll never forget my first game. Never. The fan support is amazing, and it's just good to know that people care so much about this program. I love it so much.
Who's the funniest guy on the team?
Chico McClatcher. By far. Unintentionally.
What's one thing that CP has taught you?
How to be a man. That's something a lot of people take for granted. Coming from where we come from, it's a little different. A lot of us don't have someone who cares like he does. For him to care so much and want to turn us into young men is amazing. All the things he does – once you grow and pay attention, he's just trying to make you a better person.
