Three UW Alums Compete In Quad Sculls Heats In Rio
August 06, 2016 | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing
The US women and Canadian men will move on to repechages.
Three former Washington rowers, each a veteran of Olympic competition, made their Rio 2016 debuts Saturday morning on wind-blown Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas in the quadruple sculls competition.
Β
Both the U.S. women's and the Canada men's quads will move on to repechages on Tuesday, when they'll attempt to earn spots in the finals.
Β
In the women's quadruple sculls, Adrienne Martelli '10, Megan Kalmoe '06 (who both earned bronze in the same event in 2012) and the U.S. boat finished third in their three-boat heat. Germany took the lead by the 500-meter mark, with Poland in second and the three boats maintained those places all the way down the 2,000-meter course.
Β
Germany and heat one winner, Ukraine, move to the finals while the remaining five entrants will race for the four remaining spots in the final in Monday repechage races.
Β
The Canada men's quadruple sculls, with Rob Gibson '09 (a 2012 silver medalist in the 2012 Games) rowing in the two seat, looked to be in promising position to advance directly to the finals in its heat but, in the final 500 meters, Gibson caught a crab, flipping one of his oars and bringing the shell to a near halt.
Β
The Canadians had surged into third place passing 1,500 meters and were engaged in a battle with Ukraine for the second spot, and a direct route to the final, before the mishap.
Β
Canada ended up fifth of five entries it its heat and will row Monday morning in a repechage, needing a top two finish to remain in contention for a medal. Estonia and Ukraine finished first and second to advance directly to the final.
Β
Sunday morning, three more UW alumni will see their first action in Rio, all in Canadian shells. Patricia Obee '14 will row in heat four of the women's lightweight double sculls (currently scheduled for 7:10 a.m. PT) and Will Crothers '09 and Conlin McCabe '11 will compete in heat two in the men's four (8:10 a.m. PT).
Β
The six remaining Husky rowers (the four men and two women in the United States eights) begin racing on Monday morning as the eights competitions begin.
