May 24, 2016 | Track & Field
SEATTLE - Husky Hall of Famer Aretha (Hill) Thurmond earned another accolade this week as the Pac-12 Networks announced the Women's Track & Field All-Century Team on the Pac-12 Sports Report Monday night. Thurmond, a four-time U.S. Olympian and the Pac-12 record-holder in the discus was the lone Husky to make the distinguished list.
This team was voted on by a panel of 35 consisting of coaches, former athletes, administrators and members of the media. The top two vote getters in each of the 19 events automatically qualified for the squad. The remaining 12 spots, including ties, were selected from a wildcard ballot consisting of the third, fourth and fifth place vote getters in each event.
A Husky letterwinner from 1995-98, Thurmond competed at the Olympic games in 1996, 2004, 2008, and 2012 and at the World Outdoor Championships in 1999, 2003, 2005, and 2009. She was a two-time Pan-America Games gold medalist. Thurmond made her first Olympic Team while just a sophomore at UW. She was a two-time Pac-10 Champion in the discus and she would go on to be a four-time U.S. Champion.
Thurmond currently works for USA Track & Field as the Director for International & Championship Teams. She was inducted into the Husky Hall of Fame in 2006.
