Six Huskies Garner All-Pac-12 Honors, Alvelo Named Co-Freshman Of The Year

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Led by junior Ali Aguilar and senior Kimberlee Souza, six Huskies earned 2016 All-Pac-12 honors as voted on by the conference coaches, the league office announced today (May 19). Freshman RHP Taran Alvelo was named Co-Freshman of the Year.
Alvelo garners Freshman of the Year honors after pacing the Husky pitching staff with a 17-5 record, 148 strikeouts and 14 complete games. Alvelo's 80 strikeouts in conference play was third-best while her seven wins ranked sixth. The Carroll, Ohio native was also a selection to the All-Pac-12 second team and the All-Freshman team.
Aguilar and Souza were named to the All-Pac-12 first team. The Huskies have boasted at least two representatives on the first team in each of the last eight seasons. Aguilar, who was also named first team last season, led the conference with 29 runs scored during league play. The shortstop's nine home runs was tied for first while her .750 slugging percentage was fourth-best in conference action. Souza's 26 runs batted in during Pac-12 play led the league.
Third-team members include sophomore's Trysten Melhart and Taylor Van Zee. Van Zee's six doubles ranked third in the Pac-12 while Melhart's 28 hits were sixth-best. With a .391 batting average, Melhart leads the team while Van Zee leads the squad with 56 hits including 14 doubles which is second-best in the Pac-12. The second baseman's .371 batting average is second-best on the team.
Freshman Morganne Flores joins Alvelo on the All-Freshman team. The Cypress, Calif. native registered 18 hits, three doubles, four home runs and 15 RBI in league play this season.
The Huskies will host an NCAA Regional in Seattle, welcoming Minnesota, North Dakota State and Weber State to Husky Softball Stadium this weekend (Fri-Sun., May 20-22). Washington opens play against Weber State at 7 p.m. on Friday evening. [ Tickets | Regional Central ]
