SEATTLE – It's time for some old-fashioned track and field, two teams squaring off head-to-head, as Washington and Washington State meet in Pullman for their annual Dual Meet this Saturday. The only two-team meet on Washington's schedule for years now, the series dates all the way back to 1901. The rivalry is renewed at 11 a.m. at WSU's Mooberry Track.
It will be all hands on deck for the Huskies, who are taking a massive travel squad of 102 athletes to try and sweep the Dual in Pullman, something Washington has only done once before, in 1996. Last year, the Huskies won both the men's and women's Dual in Seattle for their first sweep since 1997. The Husky men have now won three Duals in a row. Two years ago in Pullman, the Huskies were a point away from a sweep, as the men won, 84-79, but the women fell one point shy, 82-81.
This is the 97th overall Dual on the men's side, and the 37 Dual between the women's teams. Washington State holds the lead on the men's side, 58-37-1. The Huskies hold the edge in the women's race, 19-17, dating back to 1979.
Four field events begin simultaneously at 11 a.m. on Saturday, as the men's long jump, men's javelin throw, women's hammer throw, and men's pole vault all start the competition. The first track event will be the men's steeplechase at 1:15 p.m. with the 4x400m relays concluding the day at approximately 4:20 p.m.
The intensity of the Dual Meet competition annually results in some of the best marks of the season for the Huskies. Last year, thirty-four Huskies had their season-bests at the Dual.
