April 16, 2016 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE – The No. 55 Washington women's tennis team defeated 73rd ranked Washington State today, with a 4-1 victory on senior day at Bill Quillian Stadium.
Sophia Bott and Elianne Douglas-Miron were honored before the match as the two seniors today, and went on to grab the first and final singles points in today's rivalry win.
“Today was a total team effort, I'm really happy with how we responded and handled ourselves out there today,” head coach Robin Stephenson said. “I am so happy for our seniors to play their last match at home and get a great win over WSU.”
Doubles began with the Dawgs taking court one, as 33rd ranked Nour Abbes and Miki Kobayashi defeated Donika Bashota and Victoria Matejevic 6-1. The win put Kobayashi in a tie for ninth for the most doubles wins in a season at Washington. Court two was next to finish, with the Cougars defeating Douglas-Miron and Stacey Fung 6-2, followed by court three as Maria Biryukova and Aneta Miksovska defeated Tami Grende and Kenadi Hance to give the Cougars the doubles point.
The singles began with close matches all around, but the Huskies were able to grab the first sets on five courts. The first to grab the win was captain Douglas-Miron on court three with the 6-4, 6-2 win over Barbora Michalkova to tie the match at 1-1. Dropping her second set after the 6-2 win in the first, No. 115 Abbes battled back in the third for the 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win on court two.
Over on court six Kobayashi defeated Lize Leenkecht 7-6, 6-3 to give the Huskies the 3-1 lead with the deciding courts left all in third sets. Rebounding from a 1-6 loss in the second set, Bott grabbed the clinching point on court four with the 6-4 third set victory. Fung's match against 71st ranked Bashota and Hance's match on court five were abandoned.
“Elianne got the job done and got us on the board and then Sophia came through winning a very close third set to clinch,” said Stephenson. “I couldn't happier for those two seniors and for all they have given to the team all year long. We played with a lot of fight out there today and I just hope we get the opportunity to keep playing because this team deserves it.”
The Huskies now look to the postseason with the Pac-12 singles and doubles championships in Ojai, Calif. beginning next Wednesday, April 20th. Be sure to check out our team page at GoHuskies.com and follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for the latest Husky tennis news.
