LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The No. 20-ranked University of Washington softball team wrapped its opening weekend at the UNLV Sportco Kick Off Classic in the same dominant fashion as it began, earning a 9-0, six-inning decision against host UNLV on Monday morning (Feb. 15) at Eller Media Stadium. It was the Huskies' third run-rule decision of the weekend as the Dawgs improved to a perfect 5-0 on the season.
For the second straight day, second baseman Taylor Van Zee lead the offense, going 4-for-4 with an RBI and four runs scored. Center fielder Julia DePonte continued her hot start to the season, going 3-for-4, hitting a pair of singles and a double. Senior Kimberlee Souza recorded a team-high three RBI in the game as Washington posted a season-high 15 hits with nine different batters registering at least one hit.
DePonte went 10-for-18 over the course of five games to lead the offense with a .556 batting average.
Sophomore RHP Madi Schreyer earned the victory from the circle, improving to 2-0 on the year with a six-strikeout, three-hit shutout through six innings. Schreyer recorded a strikeout to end five of six innings.
Washington posted multiple runs in four different innings and jumped on UNLV early, scoring four runs in the opening two frames. With one out in the first, Van Zee legged out an infield single and later scored off senior Courtney Gano's hard hit into left field. After junior Casey Stangel walked, DePonte singled to load the bases and the Huskies scored their second run of the inning on a bases loaded walk drawn by Souza.
In the second, Van Zee's double scored junior Ali Aguilar who reached on a fielder's choice and one batter later, Aguilar scored off Stangel's single to give the Dawgs a 4-0 cushion.
Sophomore Kirstyn Thomas, who came in to pinch hit in the fourth, blew the game open with her first career home run, a two-run shot to put the Huskies up, 6-0.
The Dawgs scored three more runs to put the game into run-rule territory in the sixth. Van Zee started the rally with a leadoff single up the middle and then advanced off a wild pitch. Just as the pair did in the first inning, Gano brought Van Zee home with an RBI single. Washington ran away with a 9-0 victory after Souza's second double of the season scored two more Husky runs.
