February 13, 2016 | Softball
HENDERSON, Nev. -- The No. 20 University of Washington softball team posted 15 hits to defeat the University of South Dakota, 14-3, on the second day of the UNLV Sportco Kick Off Classic to start the 2016 season with a 3-0 mark.
Sophomore Madi Schreyer earned her first career win as a Husky, tossing a complete game, striking out five and allowing two earned runs off six hits. Fellow sophomore Julia DePonte continued her hot start, going 4-for4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Junior Ali Aguilar and sophomore Kelly Burdick had two RBI apiece while freshman Tannon Snow roped three singles in the win.
Washington quickly put up a pair of runs in the first frame. Junior Ali Aguilar drew a leadoff walk and trotted home after a pair of wild pitches loaded the bases and another walk scored her. One out later, junior Casey Stangel doubled to score the Huskies' second run.
South Dakota got one back in the bottom of the first, hitting a solo home run in their first at-bat, but the Purple and Gold used some two-out magic to make it 5-2 in the third to pull away from the Coyotes. The Huskies drew a pair of walks and Snow singled to load the bases. After a run scored off another walk, Aguilar ripped a two-RBI single to put the Dawgs up, 5-2.
South Dakota took advantage of a couple of errors in the bottom of the third to score a run, but the Huskies responded again in the fourth with two runs of their own. DePonte's double and Souza's single accounted for the runs scored.
Leading 7-2, Washington scored three more off five hits in the fourth. Aguilar led off the inning with a double and one out later, Gano singled. A trio of RBI singles by Burdick, DePonte and Snow plated the three Husky runs.
The Coyotes hit their second homer of the game in the fifth, but the Huskies responded again in the sixth, scoring four runs off three hits and one error, highlighted by a pair of triples by sophomore Taylor Van Zee and DePonte.
Schreyer ended the game with a pair of strikeouts in the sixth to give the Huskies their second run-rule victory of the season.
