SEATTLE โ Washington women's tennis head coach Robin Stephenson announced the signing of Vanessa Wong of Toronto, Canada today, signing her National Letter of Intent in the early signing period.
"We are so excited about Vanessa joining the Husky family," said Stephenson. "She has all of the characteristics we are looking for: she's a team player, she wants to get better and develop, she is successful in the classroom and on the court, and she is someone who will make everyone around her better."
Wong will join the Huskies during the 2017-18 academic year and bring a career-high ITF Juniors ranking of 90th. She most recently competed in the Junior Federation Cup, representing Canada and placing third. At Nationals she was named the 2015 U18 singles and doubles champion and was the Yucatan Cup Grade 1 ITF doubles champion in 2015.
"Vanessa will come in and make an immediate impact on the program and will play an integral part in the team's success," said Stephenson. "We are looking forward to working with Vanessa and helping her achieve her goals here at UW."
In 2015 Wong was the TC Bakkum Dutch Junior Open Grade 2 ITF doubles champion and a finalist at the IGTA Junior Cup Grade 2 ITF event. The year before she was a semi-finalist at the Repentigny Grade 1 ITF and was a singles finalist and doubles champion at a Grade 4 ITF event in Vancouver.
Three Huskies currently on the roster hail from Canada with seven coming from out of the country, all of which have joined the program since Ontario native Stephenson became head coach.
