Neale Named National Athlete Of The Week
October 31, 2016 | Cross Country
NEW ORLEANS – Capturing the individual Pac-12 Championship comes with a few perks for Amy-Eloise Neale, and one of those came today in the form of the National Athlete of the Week award from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Neale's win led the Huskies to a runner-up finish at the Pac-12 Championships last Friday in Tucson, Arizona.
The junior from Snohomish, Wash. returned to the Pac-12 Championships for the first time since 2013, and made up for lost time by moving up from seventh at the 5,000-meter mark into a battle for the lead coming into the homestretch. Neale was a step behind Colorado's Erin Clark with just twenty meters to go but surged past over the final few steps to win by four tenths of a second in 20:22.9.
This continues to be a breakout season for Neale, as she finished fourth at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational two weeks ago. She became the fourth Husky to win the individual conference title and first since Katie Flood in 2011.
Neale and the Huskies will be back in action in 11 days at the West Region Championships, where they will head into the meet ranked No. 1 in the Region and looking to secure a trip to the NCAA Championships.
