SEATTLE -- Junior Frank Garber and freshman Henry Lee shot an even-par 70 to lead the University of Washington men's golf team to a 286 team score after the first round of the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. The three-day, 54-hole tournament continues Monday (Oct. 3) before concluding on Tuesday (Oct. 4).
"We got off to a rough start with nearly every player starting slow but we settled in and started playing well as the day went on," first-year head coach Alan Murray said. "It's a tough course so you have to be accurate but we'll bounce back tomorrow. We're not too far off from a good finish."
Facing a competitive 15-team field with 10 teams ranked in the top 20 of the Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll, Washington is tied for 10th and is just four shots out of fifth after 18 holes. No. 11 Oklahoma leads the way at seven under par 273, while No. 9 Vanderbilt sits two strokes behind in second. No. 8 Florida is in third at 277 (-3), No. 10 Wake Forest holds fourth at 280 (E) and No. 5 Texas sits in fifth at 282 (+2).
Garber pocketed three birdies on Sunday en route to his season-low 18-hole score while Lee, whose even-par 70 score is a career-low, tallied two birdies.
Two strokes behind Garber and Lee is freshman Sam Warkentin who is tied for 34th place at 72 (+2), while senior Corey Pereira recorded a 74 (+4), carding three birdies. Junior Jordan Lu is tied for 65th place, totaling a 77 (+7) in the first round.
The second round of the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational will get underway on Monday morning at 6 a.m. PT. Live scoring will be available on golfstat.com.
