September 06, 2015 | Women's Rowing
AIGUEBELETTE, France – Rowing as part of the historically dominant U.S women's eight, Huskies Kerry Simmonds and Katelin Snyder helped the U.S. win its 10th straight world championship as the duo became the third and fourth UW alumni to win gold at the 2015 Senior World Championships.
The U.S. won its heat on Monday and advanced straight to the Sunday's final, where the U.S. fought its way out of a tight starting pack that included New Zealand, Canada, Great Britain, Russia and The Netherlands. Coming through the first five hundred meters, the U.S. was in second behind Great Britain. They gained the lead in the second quarter and never relented.
The Americans won in 6:05.65. New Zealand was second in 6:08.65 and Canada was third in 6:09.05. In addition to the gold medal, the U.S. women's eight qualified the boat for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

2014 UW graduate Sam Dommer rowed with the U.S. men's eight in Sunday's B final. The Americans finished in first place with a time of 5:27.64 to finish in seventh place overall. Poland finished in second place in the B final. Great Britain took first overall to win the gold medal in a tight race, beating Germany by less than two-tenths of a second.
With the seventh-place overall finish, the Americans just missed qualifying for the 2016 Olympics. The top-five teams from the Senior World Championships earned spots in the Rio games.
