Kalmoe Wins Gold At Senior Worlds
September 05, 2015 | Women's Rowing
AIGUEBELETTE, France – Several Huskies were in action in event finals on Saturday at the Senior World Championships, highlighted by Megan Kalmoe and her quadruple sculls crew winning a gold medal and multiple UW alumni helping qualify their boats for the 2016 Olympics.
Kalmoe became the second Husky to win a gold medal at the 2015 World Championships when her quadruple sculls crew came from behind on Germany in the second 500 meters of their race and surged into the lead.
The U.S. was in second in the first quarter of the women's quad race, and Germany was out and moving. Poland was close in third. In the second quarter, however, the U.S. started to move and pushed into first. As they moved through the second half, they increased their lead and finished first in 6:27.07.

Representing Canada, Huskies Will Crothers and Conlin McCabe took fourth in the men's coxless fours final. The Canadians just missed a medal, holding third place for the majority of the race until fading in the final quarter to finish in fourth place, just 1.12 second out of the bronze medal position.
The Canadians secured passage to the Rio Olympics however and ended the week with a fourth place world ranking, one better than last year's fifth place finish at the Senior World Championships in 2014.
Patricia Obee represented for Canada in the lightweight women's double final with her partner Lindsay Jennerich after the duo won its semifinal heat two days ago. The Canadians got off to a slow start and were in last place three-quarters of the way through the race. Though they posted the fasted time in the field over the last quarter, the Canadians couldn't make up enough ground to get on to the podium and finish in fourth place. Although Obee missed out on a medal, she helped qualify the boat for the 2016 Olympics.
Also representing Canada, Rob Gibson competed in the B final for the men's quadruple sculls event. In a deep field, and with only two Olympic qualification spots available in the B final, the foursome blasted out of the blocks, staying close to the Ukraine, who led the field at the start. However the Canadians were unable to hold onto the blistering pace of the lead boat, and slipped back of the field in the final 500 meters. The Canadians crossed the line in fifth place, finishing with a world ranking of 11th position. Only the top eight in this event qualified for the Olympics next year.
Hans Struzyna rowed with the U.S. in the men's quadruple sculls crew B final, as the crew finished in sixth place in 5:52.84 to finish in 12th place overall.
