BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The travels of Washington men's golf continued on Monday as they competed in the Deep South in the Shoal Creek Invitational hosted by UAB alum Graeme McDowell. Having already spent a week in Scotland, before hosting the Husky Invitational last week in Suncadia, the Dawgs faced off with a group of teams from the South, placing 10th after two rounds.
The Huskies shot identical rounds of 10-over 298 and are 20-over through 36 holes. Host UAB leads at 1-under after a second round of 5-under 283, which was the round of the day. Second place is a three-way tie at 6-over between South Carolina, North Florida and College of Charleston. GRU Augusta is fifth at 8-under, while the rest of the teams are at least 11-over-par.
The Dawgs were led by freshman Carl Yuan who was making his Husky debut. The native of China who missed the Husky Invitational to compete in his country's national championship shot two rounds of 1-over 73 and is tied for 17th. Yuan made six birdies on the day, but doubled the par-four ninth in both rounds to hold back what could have been under-par rounds.
Also playing well was Corey Pereira, fresh off his individual win at the Husky Invitational. Pereira shot 2-over 74 in the first round and then 3-over 75 in round two and is tied for 27th at 5-over for the tournament.
The other player to have both of his scores kept was Jonathan Sanders who shot rounds of 76 and 77. Sanders is tied for 49th with teammate Jordan Lu. Lu had his opening round 79 thrown out, but came back to post a solid 74 in round two.
Kevin Kwon is tied for 42nd after opening with a 74, but then had his second round thrown out as he shot 78.
In addition to the Huskies in Alabama, six Dawgs traveled to Pullman to compete at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate as individuals. Frank Garber led this group, currently sitting in a tie for third at 5-under, six shots back of Derek Bayley of Washington State.
The next best Husky was freshman Matt Marrese who is tied for 17th at 2-under after rounds of 69 and 71. That is two shots better than three Dawgs, Spencer Weiss, Chris Babcock and Tyler Salsbury who are tied for 24th at even par. The final Washington player is Greg Gildea who is tied for 35th at 2-over after a pair of 72's.
Both the tournament in Alabama and the tournament in Pullman will conclude Tuesday with 18-hole final rounds. The Dawgs will look to move up the leaderboard in Birmingham, while Garber will attempt to capture his second collegiate win in the Palouse.
