As a receiver in high school, Tristan Vizcaino knows what it feels like to score a touchdown.
But, once the sophomore arrived at Washington as a kicker, he didn't think the chances he would find the end zone again were “very likely.”
Fortunately for the sophomore, Utah State likes to attack off the right edge and, during the Huskies' 31-17 victory over the Aggies on Saturday, he got his chance.
“We saw the opening and took it,” Vizcaino said.
With Washington leading by a touchdown in the second quarter, the Huskies' found themselves facing a fourth-and-goal a few yards away from the end zone.
After spending all week working on the fake field goal, Vizcaino ran out onto the field knowing he was going to get a collegiate carry.
“This week we put it in,” he said. “We saw that the field-goal block unit had a lot of pressure coming off the right side. We saw an opening for it, so we put it in.”
When the ball landed in Vizcaino's hands, he sprinted toward the goal line, beating potential tacklers to the end zone.
“I was excited,” said Vizcaino, reliving the moment. “I was hoping they were going to call it. We had been working on it all week. I knew that, if we had a left-hash field-goal look that it was definitely going to be an option. I was just grateful the coaches trusted me enough to go out there and try to get it done.”
Before he had much time to celebrate, the kicker was mobbed by his teammates.
“It was great,” he said. “It was an adrenaline rush to the face. It was awesome.”
For Vizcaino, it was like being a receiver again.
“Being able to score a touchdown again took me back to my high school days,” he said. “It was a great feeling.”
Vizcaino never planned on scoring touchdowns for the Huskies, but in the back of his mind he held out hope it would happen. On Saturday, it did.
“You never know,” he said with a laugh. “Fakes always somehow come up in football.”
Washington coach Chris Petersen has never been one to shy away from a trick play and, when given the opportunity to make something happen, Vizcaino took advantage of the opportunity. The kicker scored a touchdown.
