Third Set Wins Propel Dawgs Past Cal Poly, 4-1
April 11, 2015 | Beach Volleyball
PALO ALTO, Calif. – The Huskies were decisive in third sets today, extending their winning streak to six with a 4-1 victory over Cal Poly at Stanford's Stadium Courts. Washington (6-0) won its first ever sand volleyball meeting against the Mustangs by taking three of four matches in third sets.
The Huskies will have two more dual matches on Saturday against St. Mary's and California as part of the Stanford Invitational, and then conclude the 2015 season with a pairs tournament on Sunday.
The four and five pairs were first on the court, with both stretching into third sets after UW had won the first sets. At No. 5, Melanie Wade and Justice Magraw took a close first set, 21-18, before Cal Poly's Casey Carroll and Shannon Fouts bounced back with a 21-12 set two win. But Wade and Magraw quickly recaptured control, taking the third set, 15-7, for the first point of the day.
Washington went up 2-0 after Bailey Tanner and Courtney Schwan came through once again at No. 4, winning 21-14, 15-21, 15-11 over Katie Conroy and Hannah Schleis. Tanner and Schwan are now 6-0 on the year at No. 4, winning a third set for the second time this year.
The only straight set match of the day was the clinching Husky point, turned in by freshmen Crissy Jones and Tia Scambray, as they topped the Cal Poly team of Kessler/Petiprin, 21-11, 21-15. Jones and Scambray have yet to drop a set, winning all twelve.
In the top match, Kaleigh Nelson and Cassie Strickland won the first set, 21-13, over Raeann Greisen and Taylor Nelson, but the Mustangs forced a third set with a 21-18 second set win. Strickland and Nelson came through in the final stanza, 15-11, to win their fourth in a row at No. 1.
Krista Vansant and Carly DeHoog also got out great with a convincing first set win at No. 3 over Taylor Gruenewald and Anna Gorman, but the Mustangs came back to win the last point of the day by the final of 11-21, 21-18, 15-9.
