No. 19 Huskies Fall To No. 2 Oregon In Game One
March 27, 2015 | Softball
EUGENE, Ore. -- No. 2 Oregon remained undefeated in the Pac-12 after taking control of the first game of the series against Washington with a five-run first inning en route to a 8-0 (5) win over the Huskies.
The Ducks now are 29-3 on the season and 7-0 in the Pac-12 while the Huskies are 30-8, 2-4 in Pac-12 following its loss. Washington and Oregon continue the series tomorrow, Saturday, March 28 at 2 p.m. at Howe Field.
Senior Kasey Stanchek made the start in the circle for the Huskies while Oregon ace Cheridan Hawkins, who boasted a 0.32 ERA entering the game, got the call for the Ducks.
Oregon staked itself to a 5-0 lead after one complete frame using an illegal pitch to score the first run of the game. One out into the inning, the Duck at the plate tripled and was thrown out at third but was called safe due to interference. The runner would later come home to score on an illegal pitch to give Oregon the early 1-0 lead. The Ducks used a two-out rally to plate four more runs in the inning. With runners on first and second, a single scored a run before Koral Costa unloaded on a three-run home run to give the home team a 5-0 advantage.
Kristin Cochran entered in the second inning to pitch the remainder of the game for Washington. The freshman pitched well in relief through the first two innings, as the Husky defense went on to retire the side in order in back-to-back innings.
After the Ducks drew a lead off walk in the bottom of the fourth, Nikki Udria hit a ball over the fence to score the baserunner but she was ruled out before crossing home because a player from the dugout crossed into fair territory too early during the celebration to negate Udria's run. Oregon led 6-0 after four complete innings.
The Ducks used a two-run home run in the fifth to extend their lead to 8-0 and end the game early as Oregon took game one of the three-game series.
Stanchek (10-3) took the loss, allowing five runs on four hits and one walk in one inning of work. Cochran pitched 3.1 innings of relief and gave up three runs on three hits and one walk with one strikeout.
Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for 2 p.m. tomorrow (March 28). The game will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
