Dawgs Shut Out Boise State, Win Six In a Row
March 15, 2015 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE - The University of Washington women's tennis team continued its winning ways with a 7-0 home victory over Boise State at the Nordstrom Tennis Center Sunday afternoon. The win puts the Huskies at 4-0 on their current four-game home stand and gives them their sixth consecutive win, Washington's longest regular-season winning streak since 2010.
“It was a good match overall,” said Husky head coach Robin Stephenson. “It's nice to get the shutout and everybody gets a win. We've won several matches now in a row, we're really starting to play better and come together as a team, and we're really seeing a lot of the work we put in pay off."
After losing the doubles point in their last match against Portland on Friday, the Huskies got started on the right foot today. Elianne Douglas-Miron and Miki Kobayashi set things off with a quick 6-2 victory on court one followed by a 6-3 victory by Julija Lukac and Grace Ysidora on court three to earn the doubles point.
“We mixed up the doubles teams at one and two, and I think the girls responded well,” added Stephenson. “We got a quick one at number one, which was good to see. It was just a good team effort.”
The Huskies continued their strong play once singles matches started, with Julija Lukac defeating Sammie Watson 6-1, 6-0 at court three and Capucine Gregoire disposing of Nancy Menjivar 6-2, 6-2, at number six singles, putting the Dawgs up 3-0. With the win, Lukac earned her 10th consecutive victory, and has not dropped a single set since losing a match at Hawaii on Janurary 18. Gregoire has also been playing well recently, picking up her sixth consecutive victory today.
But despite what the score may indicate, the Boise State Broncos battled back hard, giving the Huskies all they had to prevent the sweep. Miki Kobayashi was tied 4-4 in both sets but was able to battle and earn a 6-4, 6-4 victory on court four to put the Huskies up 4-0 and clinch the victory. On court two, Grace Ysidora had to bounce back from 0-3 and 5-6 deficits in the first set to finally take a 7-6 set victory. She proceeded to cruise through the second set to take the match, 7-6, 6-1.
The final two contests, Elianne Douglas-Miron at court one and Riko Shimizu at court five, were both forced to a third tiebreaker set, in which Huskies were able to prevail. Douglas-Miron took split the first two sets 6-3, 5-7 and was able to handle opponent Teal Vosburgh 10-4 in the third set. Shimizu had a bit more trouble in her tiebreaker, falling behind 7-9, but rallied back to take the final set 11-9 for a 6-3, 6-7, 11-9 victory to finish the match.
“These matches will definitely help us,” said Stephenson. Everybody won a couple matches this weekend, and it has to help with confidence moving forward, and knowing when it comes down to the big point, we're playing the big point so much better than at the start of the season. We're ready for anything.”
Following the four-game home stand, the Huskies now look forward to Pac-12 play as they hit the road to face Colorado and Utah in their first conference away matches of the season. They will return on March 27-28 to host USC and UCLA.
