February 22, 2015 | Gymnastics
SEATTLE – Hailey Burleson posted a personal-best on vault to win her first event title of the season and Jackie McCartin won beam as UW gymnastics scored a 49.0 or better on three of four events Saturday night at Alaska Airlines Arena.
“We have the ability, but we need to put it all together,” head coach Joanne Bowers said. “If we had a good performance on bars, we would be right where we need to be. We did show a lot of character, and we are learning some really good lessons, some tough lessons.”
The Huskies got off to a great start with their second best vault showing of the season, scoring a 49.075. Burleson anchored the lineup with her personal-best 9.925, her first vault title after posting 9.8s or better in each of the last six meets. Allison Northey's 9.9 tied her personal-best set earlier this season at OSU as she took second. Freshman Emily Liddle also posted a career high with a 9.825 in the leadoff spot.
Usually solid on bars, the Huskies posted a season-low team score and failed to post a routine above a 9.7. They rebounded to post a 49.0 as a team on beam, led by Jackie McCartin's season-best 9.9 and first event title of the season. McKenzie Fechter and Janae Janik each scored 9.85s to tie for third on beam as the Huskies posted a 49.0 as a team.
Northey and Janik each scored 9.875s on floor to help the GymDawg's to a 49.150, their second-best mark of the season. Northey has now scored a 9.8 or higher in each of the five meets she has competed on floor. Faith Morrison scored a 9.85, tying her second best score of the season.
Cal's Toni-Ann Williams won the all-around with a score of 39.375. The Golden Bears' team total of 196.600 was good enough to take first. The Huskies placed second with a 195.325 and SPU third at 192.050.
The Huskies return to action with a trip to Palo Alto, Calif., to take on the Stanford Cardinal on March 2. The meet will begin at 7 p.m. PT and will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
