COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- No. 17 Washington dropped its final non-conference matchup of the season, losing to No. 20 Maryland, 1-0. In a matchup of two of the top programs in the nation, the Terrapins held their home field.
In front of a racucous crowd, Maryland outshot the Huskies, 24-7. Despite the chances for the Terrapins, the Dawgs defense held strong through the first half. Overall, Ryan Herman made seven saves as the Huskies were able to turn away the Maryland offense, except for one miscue.
Maryland took a 1-0 lead just after the half on an own goal from the Huskies. The Terrapins sent in a dangerous cross, while Washington was unable to clear, knocking the ball into their own net from the middle of the six-yard box.
It was an unfortunate bounce for a defense that was otherwise flawless as they have been for most of the seeason.
Offensively, the Dawgs were led by Henry Wingo who took four shots, but Maryland was not forced to make any saves.
The match versus Maryland was the final non-conference game of the season for the Huskies. They begin the second half of the Pac-12 next week by hosting California and No. 3 Stanford. The Golden Bears come to Husky Soccer Field on Friday at 6 p.m., while the Cardinal come to Seattle on Monday for a 7 p.m.
