SEATTLE – The University of Washington softball team and head coach Heather Tarr announced its 2016 schedule today, consisting of a challenging 52-game regular-season slate, including 17 home games at Husky Softball Stadium.
Coming off of an NCAA regional final berth in 2015, the Huskies will face 17 teams from last season's NCAA Tournament, with five making it all the way to the Women's College World Series and a matchup against the two-time defending NCAA champions Florida and 2015 runner-up Michigan.
“This year's schedule will be challenging and exciting for our team,” Tarr said. “It is one of the hardest schedules we have ever put together at Washington. It is a great mix of teams from all over the country and from many different conferences that will challenge and prepare us to get to where we want to be."
Washington opens the season in Las Vegas on Feb. 12-15 to play five games in the UNLV Sportco Kick Off Classic before making a return trip to the prestigious Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. on Feb. 19-21 and Feb. 26-28. The Huskies will face 2015 NCAA Tournament teams in Oklahoma, Texas A&M, UCF, Notre Dame, Florida, Nebraska and Michigan in the opening three tournaments.
Husky fans will have a host of opportunities to see the team up close this season, as the squad will host the annual Husky Classic on March 4-6 to open the home schedule. Washington welcomes Boise State, Kent State, Pacific and Montana to Husky Softball Stadium in the three-day event.
The Purple and Gold will conclude its early-season tournament play at the Fresno State Tournament on March 11-13 in Fresno, Calif.
Washington opens Pac-12 Conference play at home against Oregon (March 19-21). The Huskies will also host Pac-12 matchups against Arizona (April 1-3), California (April 15-17) and Utah (April 29-May 1).
The road portion of the league slate will kick off in Los Angeles for a three-game series against UCLA (March 24-26). The next trip has the team scheduled for a three-game set against Arizona State in Tempe (April 8-10).
After a road trip to Corvallis to play Oregon State (April 22-24), Washington heads south to the Bayou to play a three-game series against SEC powerhouse LSU in Baton Rouge, La. on May 6-8. The Huskies return to Pac-12 play to wrap up the regular season against Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif. on May 12-14.
Campus sites will serve as the backdrop for the NCAA Regional and Super Regional rounds the weeks of May 20-22 and 26-29, with the Women's College World Series taking place in Oklahoma City on June 2-8.
The Division I Softball Committee will conduct selections for the 2016 NCAA Division I Softball Championship May 15, 2016. The 64-team field will be selected from 283 NCAA Division I institutions sponsoring the sport of softball. Of the 64 teams, 32 teams will receive automatic qualification with the remaining best 32 teams selected on an at-large basis. Sixteen teams will be seeded and each of the seeded teams will be placed at one of the regional sites.
After one of the best power-hitting seasons in program history last season, Washington welcomes eight newcomers and returns all but four members of its 2015 squad. Among those returning are four All-Pacific Region players - junior Ali Aguilar, senior Courtney Gano, sophomore Taylor Van Zee and junior Casey Stangel.
