MONTEREY, Calif. – Washington sent their Gold team to the Otter Invitational hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay this week to play as individuals. The tournament at the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Club included the Huskies that won't be going to The Gifford Collegiate in two weeks.
Playing against a field of Division II teams, the Huskies are not involved in the team competition. Chico State leads at 5-under as one of two teams under par. The Washington players are involved in the individual race, however, with three Huskies inside the top-10.
Tyler Salsbury leads the Dawgss at 3-under after a pair of rounds in red figures. The senior is tied for sixth, six shots back of Richard Mansell of Nova Southeastern who leads at 9-under. Salsbury opened with a round of 2-under 70 and then backed that up with a second round of 1-under 71.
Also under par are Kevin Kwon and Jordan Lu who are tied for eighth at 2-under. Both players fired identical 1-under 71's for both rounds to sit seven shots back of the lead entering Tuesday's final round.
Greg Gildea was also consistent, posting back-to back even-par 72's on Monday. The sophomore is now tied for 14th at even-par for the tournament.
Spencer Weiss got off to a good start in the morning, carding a 2-under 70 to get inside the top-10. His 6-over 76 in the afternoon, however, dropped him back to a tie for 20th at 2-over for the championship.
The five Huskies will be back at it on Tuesday for the final round of the Otter Invitational on the shores of Monterey Bay. Each Washington player has a chance of top-10 finishes or higher as they play the Black Horse course at the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Club.
