Walker, Three Home Runs Lead Huskies Past Cal
May 09, 2014 | Softball
BERKELEY, Calif. – Bryana Walker held the Bears to just one run over seven innings, and the Huskies hit three home runs, as No. 8 Washington defeated Cal, 9-1, on Friday at Levine-Fricke Field in Berkeley, Calif.
The win assures the Huskies (32-13, 12-9 Pac-12) of a winning series over the Bears (23-28, 4-17) in the final Pac-12 series of the season.
Walker struck out five Cal batters and allowed just one run on four hits to earn the win and improve to 18-8 on the season. Walker picked up her 13th complete-game of the season.
The Huskies equaled a team season-high with three home runs, as Hooch Fagaly, Kaitlin Inglesby, and Kylee Lahners all went yard. The Huskies last hit three home runs in an 11-7 win over then-No. 9 Arizona on May 2.
Before the Huskies put runs on the board, they made great defensive plays to prevent Cal from scoring.
With a Cal runner on 1st base and one out in the 2nd, Kelli Suguro leaped to snare a line drive up the middle. Suguro then doubled off the runner at 1st for the inning-ending double play.
Suguro then led off the top of the 3rd for the Huskies with a hard-hit single. After advancing to 3rd on a sacrifice bunt and a ground ball to the right side, Suguro scored on a two-out single by Victoria Hayward.
Then Hooch Fagaly and Kaitlin Inglesby hit back-to-back home runs to give the Huskies a 4-0 lead. Fagaly's home run – her third in nine games – was a two-run blast, plating Hayward.
The Huskies added a run in the 5th, as Bridget Raftery drove home Whitney Jones with a two-out single.
After the Bears finally got to Walker for a run in the bottom of the 6th on a sacrifice fly, the Huskies answered right back in the next inning. A one-out single by Inglesby in the top of the 7th brought Kylee Lahners to the plate. Lahners crushed a two-run home run – her team-leading 16th round-tripper of the season – to score pinch-runner Mercedes Wetmore. Lahners has now hit six home runs in her past 11 games.
Walker nailed down the victory for the Huskies with two strikeouts and a fly ball in the bottom of the 7th.
The Huskies and Bears will wrap up the series Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. on the Pac-12 Networks.
