EUGENE, Ore. – Kelli Suguro matched a career-high with three hits, and Victoria Hayward and Jennie McNeill each drove in runs, as the No. 5 Huskies scored twice in the final three innings of their game against No. 2 Oregon on Sunday in Eugene, Oregon.
Despite Washington's resiliency after the Ducks (30-4) took a 2-0 lead in the 2nd, the Huskies (21-10) lost, 4-3, on a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 7th inning.
With the Ducks leading, 2-0, Suguro hit a one-out single and advanced to third base after Hayward drove a double. Suguro eventually scored on a wild pitch to bring the Huskies within one at 2-1.
In the 5th inning, again it was Suguro who got the rally going for the Huskies. With one out, the junior from Kent, Washington connected for a hard-hit double. A single by Hayward put runners on second and third with one out for McNeill.
McNeill stroked a groundball through the infield, scoring Suguro to tie the game at 2-2.
The Huskies also got great defense from Suguro who snagged a hard-hit line drive when the Ducks led off the bottom of the 4th.
Bryana Walker took over for starting pitcher Kaitlin Inglesby with a runner on third base and one out in the 5th. Walker maintained the tie by getting a strikeout and a fly ball to end the inning.
The Ducks threatened again in the 6th, putting runners on first and second with one out, but Walker got a fly ball and a ground ball to escape the jam.
Leading off the top of the 7th inning, Whitney Jones crushed a double to put the go-ahead run on 2nd base. After an infield single by Suguro, Hayward lifted a sacrifice fly to score Jones and give the Huskies a 3-2 lead.
Suguro's three hits matched a career-high set on April 6, 2013 vs. Oregon State. With the three hits, Suguro raised her average to its highest since batting .360 on March 1.
Hayward finished 2-for-3, with one RBI and has now hit safely in 13 of her past 16 games, leading the team with a .386 batting average during that stretch.
With the loss, Walker's record is now 13-6.
The Huskies will be back in action Tuesday in a cross-town showdown at Seattle U. First pitch from Logan Field will be at 6:00 p.m.
