ATHENS, Ga. - Washington's Ying Luo shot 77 (+5) in the third round of the NCAA Championship on Thursday at University of Georgia Golf Course and is tied for 50th on the individual leaderboard heading into Friday's final round.
For the first time in three days, Luo faced some adversity on the course. She started her round with a bogey and double-bogey before earning a stroke back on No. 6 with a birdie. She immediately followed with a double bogey on No. 7 and a bogey on No. 9 to make the turn at +5.
The walk-on freshman from Shenzhan, China started her back nine with a birdie on No. 10, but again followed with a bogey. She got strokes back on No.'s 15 and 17 with birdies, but finished her day with a double bogey.
"She played well," Husky Coach Mary Lou Mulflur said despite Luo's final score. "If you throw out the double-bogey holes, she was 1-under on the other 15 holes."
Luo equaled her total from the previous two days combined with four birdies.
"But the three doubles are costly. She didn't make bad decisions, it was just a lack of execution on the holes," Mulflur said.
Luo is +7 for the tournament with a three day score of 72-74-77-223.
Friday is the final day of play. The individual title is still up for grabs with USC's Annie Park holding a two-shot lead. USC is also running away in the team race with a 16-shot advantage heading into the final round.
