UW, Williams Finish Third At Pac-12 Championship

LOS ANGELES -- Chris Williams was third among individuals and Trevor Simsby was fifth to lead the Husky men's golf team to a third-place finish in the Pac-12 Championship at Los Angeles Country Club on Wednesday.

Simsby's 68 on the par-70 course was tops among the Huskies' six golfers that combined to shoot 354 in the final round. The team's score of +4 was second best on the day, trailing only California's even-par 350.
"I thought we did a great job today. It would have been easy to not bring any intensity today," Husky Coach Matt Thurmond said. "The two teams we were playing with had plenty of fans out there and were playing for a lot, and we were in a pretty distant third and way ahead of fourth."
Washington came into the round 20 shots back of second-place UCLA and six shots ahead of Arizona State.
"It was a day when we had to bring our own energy and we did. We had a really good round today."
Washington, ranked fourth by Golfstat.com and sixth by Golfweek/Sagarin, finished with a four-round total of 1432 (+32). They finished behind Cal (+6) and host UCLA (+15), the only teams in the Pac-12 field ranked higher than the Huskies.
Fourth-place Stanford finished 22 strokes behind Washington.
California swept both the team and individual titles. The No. 1 ranked Bears proved their talent during the tournament by tallying the lowest score in three of the four rounds and having four golfers finish in the top 15 out of 72 competitors.
Max Homa (-9) led from start to finish, running away from the field for a five shot victory and the individual Pac-12 championship. His teammate Michael Weaver (-4) was second, followed by UCLA's Anton Arboleda (-2) and UW's Williams.
Williams had to fight hard to towards the end to get into a tie for third. He birdied 18 immediately following a bogey on 17 to get his round back to even-par 70. He totaled five birdies on the day, including three on the first four holes. Over the final 14 holes Williams had five bogeys, but also had birdies on 14 and the aforementioned 18th hole.
"Chris was exceptional all week long," Thurmond said. "Max Homa had a great tournament, but Chris was right there."
His top-10 finish was the 29th of his UW career and ninth this season.
Perhaps the most encouraging news from the tournament for the Huskies was the steady play of Simsby. The junior ended with a 72-hole total of 279 (-1) to tie for fifth. His finish came on the heels of ending the previous four tournaments no better than 47th.
Simsby started the season with four top-10 finishes, including a win in the Pac-12 Preview. For Thurmond and the Huskies, Wednesday's result could be an indication that he is back to his previous form.
"I'm especially excited for Trevor," he said. "He has really been struggling for the last couple months. To see him come back and finish top five in the Pac-12 Conference Championship is super exciting."
Cheng-Tsung Pan and Charlie Hughes were the only other Huskies in the top 25. Pan shot a final round 71 to tally a three-day total of 291 (+11). He ended up tied for 21st.
Hughes was one-shot back of Pan and tied for 24th. He shot 72 in the final round to end up +12 overall with a 292 total.
Junior Gerrit Chambers equaled his best round of the tournament with a 73. He ended up with a total of 301 (+21) and tied for 49th.
Freshman Jonathan Sanders could never recover from a quadruple bogey on the second hole during the final round and ended up shooting a non-counting 80. He finished his first-ever Pac-12 Championship tied for 50th with a total of 302 (+22).
The Huskies' third at the Pac-12 Championship was the fifth time under Thurmond that the Huskies have finished third or better.
Washington will now wait to hear where it will be sent for the NCAA Regionals. The announcement will be made live on NCAA.com on Monday, May 6 at 6 p.m. PT.
